Cold Sterilization Water Filter
' Hi-Flow Three-Stage Water Filter '

Cold Sterile Three-Stage Water Filtration System (Small) uses ten inch canisters (clear), 3/4" Npt. Threaded fittings, flows 3.8 Gpm (14.3Lpm) @ 40 psig for approximately 5,000 gallons (18,925 L.). Its special filter media provides 3 types of filtration: Barrier Restriction, Adsorption, Absorption. It sorbs and restricts the following: Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Copper , Iron, Zinc, Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOC), tannins, Proteins, Dissolved Organics, Chlorine, Pesticides/Insecticides, Metal Particulates, Algae, Fungus, Giardia, Cryptospordium, and E. coli Bacteria. (Shown is the Large System w/ 20" canisters)
The Cold Sterile System & Filter Media were tested under American Society of Testing & Materials & E.P.A. Methods of Analysis for Potable Water.

1st Canister - Fin-L-Filter filled with Molecular Absorption Discs processed in sterile 1.0µ/Siemens/cm (conductivity) water. This provides 20-35% more efficiency in absorbing / adsorbing heavy metals. This filter media passes NSF Standards 53, 53b, 63 for heavy metals filtration, V.O.C. (volatile organic chemicals), dissolved organic matter, phosphates reduction & extractables in potable water. Outputs nearly 4 gallons per minute.
2nd Canister - Fin-L-Filter Model filled with a single 0.20µm filter bag (U.S. Patent) capable of providing a 99.9% (three log) reduction in particulates. This filter bag will remove free floating E. Coli bacteria, algae, fungus, Giardia cysts & Cryptosporidium. Note: If this filter is to be used on microbiologically unsafe water it must be in conjunction with Chlorine or Chlorine dioxide in a 2.00 - 3.00 mg/L concentration for viral control and to prevent bacteria growing through filter medium.
3rd Canister - Contains polypropylene inner/outer wraps, bonded power activated 0.50 micron bonded carbon block which also contains a molecular sieve, polypropylene endcaps and Buna - N gaskets. In addition this filter will adsorb VOC's, Pesticides, and provide lower lead, mercury & cadmium due to the addition, into the carbon cartridge, of a highly selective charged ceramic. This cartridge is NSF Certified to trap Giardia & Cryptosporidium cysts via a 99.9% (absolute) 1.00 micron rating.
Cold Sterile Small System
This system uses ten inch canisters (clear), ¾" Npt. Threaded fittings, flows 3.8 Gpm (14.3Lpm) for approximately 5,000 gallons (18925 L.). The smaller system can provide lower lead, mercury, cadmium levels due to the addition, into the carbon cartridge, of a highly selective charged ceramic. It sorbs and restricts the following: Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Copper , Iron, Zinc, Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOC), tannins, Proteins, Dissolved Organics, Chlorine, Pesticides/Insecticides, Metal Particulates, Algae, Fungus, Giardia, Cryptospordium, and E. coli Bacteria.
Water Flow Rate: 3.8 Gpm @ 40 psig Materials of Construction: Canister - Polypropylene Top SANS Sump NSF, International Approved. Fin-L-Filter - UHMW Polyethylene End Caps w/ Acrylic & Polypropylene Tubes.
The Cold Sterile Water Filter & Filter Media were tested under A.S.T.M.* & E.P.A. Methods of Analysis for Potable Water. The Fin-L-Filter molecular absorption discs meet all NSF, International criteria as a chemical sorbent media under Standards 42, 53, 53b, 61, 63. In addition, both disc sorbent medium and the entire apparatus were tested as to performance and claims in the UMDNJ Pharmacology - Toxicology Dept. *American Society of Testing & Materials Volumes: 11.01 & 11.02 Water Analysis. Filter Media (Three Types of Filtration): Barrier Restriction, Adsorption, Absorption.
Cold Sterile Large System
The larger system uses twenty inch canisters (blue sump) 1 ½" Npt. Threaded fittings, flows 14-20 Gpm (75.7 Lpm) for 150,000 gallons (567750 L) and it's last state 0.50 µm Carbon (size: 4" diameter x 20" length) doesn't contain a charged ceramic. However, the discs are much larger (30) 3 ¾" and it's filter bag 4" x 18 ½" is also much larger. The larger system replacement media costs hundreds of dollars but capable of providing water for $0.002 per gallon or less for commercial usage.

FAQ:

What is the Difference between the two Cold Sterile Systems?
The small system uses ten inch canisters (clear), ¾" Npt.
What is the difference between this system and other multiple canister systems?
First, quality through materials of construction. Each plastic type is FDA Approved, in addition all all fittings are threaded schedule PVC (NSF Approved). The first & second canister's end caps are injection molded virgin polypropylene (without any fillers). The cast acrylic tube (disc retainer), polypropylene bag retainer and end caps are prewashed in 1.0 megaOhm/cm (1.0µ/S/cm) water.
Second, the unique system of media is U.S. Patented, providing a first stage sorbing of heavy metals, VOC's, Tannins, Organic Carbons and total Phosphates. The second state 0.50µm filter barrier restricts: Giardia, Cryptosporidium Oocysts, fungus, algae, diatoms, metal particulates most bacteria, endotoxins, biopolymers, pyrogens. The third stage 0.50µm activated carbon block outerwrapped with special plastic fibers (longevity) and the inside channel is filled with a NSF Approved charged ceramic for heavy metals.
Third, the flow rates are 602% faster than the 0.60 gpm (2.2Lpm) flow other systems are restricted in order to perform under ANSI/NSF Standards for 10" cartridge filter systems.
Fourth, performance claims have been validated in a Medical School's Pharmacology/Toxicology Dept. under EPA Standards & Methods of Analysis or the higher Medical CAP Standards/Requirements. Japan also certified the 14.0 Cold Sterile flow rate.
What is the difference between R/O System (low pressure) permeate and Cold Sterile Filtrate?
Low pressure R/O System is called NanoFiltration and high pressure R/O Systems is called HyperFiltration [which require 225 psi @ 77 F and a 2000mg/L concentration of a solute] (i.e. copper sulfate) to deliver 98% rejection. Which leaves 2% of 2000mg/L or 40mg/L concentration of a toxic metal. The low pressure systems instead deliver between 94-98% removal of total dissolved solids or the mineral content of feedwater. The low pressure R/O System is not capable 96% rejection of a specific compound even at the 2000mg/L solute concentration. This is due to the lower operating pressure, type of membrane, membrane charge and membrane pore size. Basically the low pressure R/O System or NanoFiltration functions as a softening membrane passing low amounts of clean water as permeate and producing large amounts of waste water. This NanoFiltration cannot reject VOC's, low levels of heavy metals, Organic Carbons, Pesticides/Insecticides, Poly and complex Phosphates, Water Conditioning Polymers. The low grade carbon and string would cartridge filters are prefilters for the membrane only ---- they are not ANSI/NSF Certified. Low TDS (total dissolved solids) numbers i.e. 30µ/S Conductivity doesn't mean that the water is pollutant free ---- only low in minerals. In fact R/O water could contain high levels of pesticides, volatile organic chemicals, complexed phosphates and dangerous Coliform bacteria while still showing 35-45µ/S TDS Conductivity reading. The Cold Sterile uses three separate stages to sorb heavy metals, VOC's, TOC's, Total Phosphates, fungus, algae, diatoms, particulates, Giardia, Cryptosporidium, bacteria, endotoxins, pyrogens, biopolymers, charged water conditioning polymers, Chlorine, Odor, Taste, VOC's, Pesticides/Insecticides, particulates, Giardia, Cryptosporidium, heavy metals to meet U.S.A., Canada, E.E.C., Japan Standards. The Cold Sterile doesn't remove calcium, magnesium divalent cations nor strip the water's alkaline reserve. People, animals, reptiles, birds, marinefish & invertebrates and African Cichlids benefit from very high quality water with the minerals and buffering capacity remaining in the filtrate. In addition, our Cold Sterile's filtrate meets or exceeds ANSI/NSF Potable Water & FDA Bottled Water Quality Standards. Actually, our Cold Sterile has passed the more stringent Japanese Water Quality Standards and is certified to produce 14.0 liters per minute of potable water for usage in Japan.
How much water does the average family use and how long will a Cold Sterile last if used for whole house filtration? Will there be sufficient water flow to the sinks and bathroom fixtures?
The average family of four members consumes about 10,000 gallons per 90 day period. The Cold Sterile should last 45 days under the above conditions. Whole house filtration provides high quality water for drinking, baths, showers and laundry washing. Yes, toilets will also get high grade filtered water --- but, how do you separate the plumbing lines? The Cold Sterile can deliver 3.8 Gpm@40psig. Kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks and shower heads have flow restrictors which limit flow to 1gpm or slower. Other than starting the washing machine (on max. size load) and then trying to take a shower as the washing machine filled ---- a problem for most water softener customers ---- could prove difficult. If you are concerned about using filtered water in applications other than drinking? Install the Cold Sterile System on the cold water line under the kitchen sink. A large Cold Sterile will supply an entire house filtered water supply (150,000 gallons) for $0.0021 per gallon filtration cost.
Can we use the Cold Sterile for both our Pet Applications and our Drinking Water needs? Does the Cold Sterile produce high enough quality water for my Reef Tank?
Yes, the Cold Sterile produces very high quality water meeting the ASNI/NSF Standards. The filtrate produced contains: Chlorine 0.05mg/L, Odor, 3 TON, Lead 6ng/ml, Mercury 1ng/ml, Cadmium 3.0ng/L, Zinc, 200ng/L, Copper, 100ng/ml VOC's, 100ng/ml, Turbidity 0.50 NTU, Particle count 0.45µm, Pesticides .01 ng/ml, Total Phosphates 100ng/ml, Tannins 50ng/ml, Algae 00/ml, Giardia, Cryptosporidium, .01%, pH 6.5-8.5. A new add-on activated alumina sorbs phosphates, silicates and fluorides. The big advantage for human consumption and reef applications is the water is not stripped of calcium, magnesium nor alkaline reserve. Drinking low hardness water is not healthy. Reef tanks require hardness!! Kalkwasser or calcium, magnesium and carbonates, bicarbonates and hydroxides are regularly added as supplements between water change periods.
Is it true that very high quality water (ultra pure) can actually deteriorate into unhealthy contaminated water through storage?
Yes, that is true fact. Ultra pure water is the perfect solvent. Presently many reef tank owners use R/O [nanofiltration], Ion-exchange resins and combination sof R/O + mixed bed resins or split bed resins + mixed bed resins producing high quality water [conductivity: 1.0µ/S-0.243µ/S] which requires the addition of buffers and minerals supplements before it can be used during replacement water changes. If this water is to bused as replacement for evaporation many add calcium, magnesium, iodide, selenium, and trace elements solutions. However, the big problem for reef tanks is the hobbyists lack of knowledge of high quality water's unique solvent effects. First, high quality, water should have conductivity measured via gold flow cell, on an instrument capable of reading to 0.056µ/S, calibrated by a prepared 25µ/S standard solution. Second, all ultra pure water must be piped sealed through teflon or polypropylene tubing/pipe into a sealed polypropylene storage container. All pipes and storage tanks must be flushed with ultra-pure rated water prior to first usage. If any air contact is made this highly reactive water will be turned into literally waste water. For example: 1.0-2.43 µ/S water will absorb plastizers, VOCs, heavy metals out of most plastics and then absorb any room's undesirable gasses CO, CO2, NH3, O3, N2, VOC's which then produces [5-100µ/S] gas and impurity saturated water. This water will contain: vinyl chloride monomer, epoxides, cyanides, thiocyanides, heavy metals, volatile amines, trihalomethanes, other volatile organic chemicals + CO2 Gas, NH3 Gas & other atmospheric gasseous contaminates. This contaminated water is then dosed with calcium, strontium, selenium, iodide and assorted trace elements before addition to the reef tank. This R/O or D.I. water may also contain heterotrophic bacteria or endotoxins that grew in the filter media. Ref.: Heterotrophic menace: fact or fiction?, Water Technology, Feb. 1999. Utlra Pure water is not considered potable water by the U.S.E.P.A.
Heavy Metal Reduction Testing
The CB-0.5 "Dual Media" Cartridge is designed for multi-purpose filtration of liquids. It contains a powdered activated carbon (PAC) briquette, which is more effective at reducing levels of VOC's and certain pesticides than granular activated carbon. In addition, the carbon briquette reduces levels of chlorine, sediment down to 0.5 micron, and Clardia and Cryptosporidium cystst.
The cartridge also contains a specially designed resin which reduces certain heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. The design ensures that the water passes through three steps of filtration. In the first step, the polypropylene prefilter reduces coarse sediment particles. In the second, the PAC briquette absorbs chlorine, certain organic contaminants, and absorbable metals, as well as filtering particles down to 0.5 micron in size. A directional flow tube guides the water through the entire length of the resin bed, ensuring maximum contact. In the third and final step, the resin greatly reduces lead and certain other heavy metals that may be present in the water.
